The Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) is excited to offer and announce a competitive opportunity to serve as an Industrial Hygienist, supporting the Central Office Environmental Division’s Statewide services. This position will be located in Richmond, Virginia . The selected candidate will report to and assist the Industrial Hygiene Program Manager in administering VDOT's Industrial Hygiene Programs.
This challenging and rewarding position’s specific responsibilities and duties will include, but are not limited to:
Program Implementation
The candidate will support areas of the Department’s Industrial Hygiene Programs, which include, and are not limited to, investigating and evaluating the adequacy of industrial hygiene controls in the workplace, reviewing the Industrial Hygiene elements of contractor health and safety plans for lead abatement projects on structural recoating, demolition, and repair projects, reviewing new products proposed for the VDOT Materials Division Approved Products Lists and the Integrated Supply Service Program new products review process, conducting training and fit testing, performing outreach to the Districts and Divisions, and conducting other industrial hygiene activities as directed by the Industrial Hygiene Program Manager.

• Lead Exposure Control Program
• Hexavalent Chromium Exposure Control Program
• Respirable Crystalline Silica Exposure Control Program
• Laser Safety Program
• Hearing Conservation Program
• Safe Drinking Water
• Indoor Air Quality
Monitoring and Reporting
The candidate will use industry exposure assessment strategies to evaluate and characterize employee exposures to industrial hygiene-related hazards in the workplace. Industrial hygienist activities include, and are not limited to, performing baseline and periodic hygiene surveys of work areas and compliance assessments of VDOT operations, preparing detailed reports of industrial hygiene sampling events, conducting recordkeeping and data management, providing interpretation of sampling and inspection results, and communicating recommended remediation and control activities to the impacted parties and key stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications
• Professional experience in the industrial hygiene field or other safety and environmental areas.
• Knowledge of industrial hygiene concepts, principles, techniques and practices.
• Ability to collect scientific samples and interpret analytical results,
• Ability to interpret and apply codes, laws and standards.
• Knowledge of occupational safety and health standards, National consensus standards, and health-based exposure values applicable to the practice of industrial hygiene.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing with others, including making presentations.
• Ability to interact effectively with internal and external customers.
• Skill in providing customer service to internal and external customers.
Additional Considerations
• A combination of training, experience, or education in Industrial Hygiene, Hazard Control, Occupational Health or related field desired.

VDOT is an emergency operation agency. Positions physically working within Central Office locations may be designated upon request and coordination among the respective District Engineer or Administrator and Chief. Assignments are updated annually. Not all designated employees are provided an emergency operations assignment.
