The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining, and operating the state’s roads, bridges, tunnels, and ferries. Through the Commonwealth Transportation Board, it also provides funding for airports, rail, and public transportation. Virginia has the third largest state-maintained highway system in the country covering 58,321 miles of interstate, primary, secondary and frontage roads. The Salem District maintains more than 9,200 miles of roads in southwestern Virginia in the counties of:
Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke. The district serves more than 650,000 citizens in these counties and the 14 cities and towns in its boundaries.
We are seeking an innovative and collaborative Fleet Administrator. This position reports to the District Equipment Manager. The successful candidate will oversee processes to meet customer equipment needs through rental and leasing contracts, dispose of rental and non-rental equipment, develop district equipment policies and procedures, and resolve administrative problems. Selected incumbent ensures Fleet Focus M5 system data elements for equipment assets are entered accurately and in a timely manner, processing new equipment inventory and proper documentation for all equipment transactions. This position also supports the fuel inventory program and environmental compliance as it related to shop operations and fuel inventory, storage, and dispensing. Incumbent will manage procurement process and work with vendors to resolve issues. Incumbent will also manage equipment contracts, authorize contract use and assess effectiveness, determine user needs, and best way to meet those needs, e.g. internal vs rental. This position also coordinates in-house and outsourced repair efforts with internal customers and vendors.
Minimum Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of the functional requirements and capabilities of various types of heavy-duty equipment. Ability to understand the relevance of individual equipment types for the overall fleet. Knowledge of equipment inventory procedures and practices. Ability to monitor budgets. Ability to prioritize, organize and communicate information. Ability to research, gather, and analyze data. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to work independently. Knowledge of equipment and fleet automated management system functionality. Skill in use of computers and software including using Microsoft Windows, MS Office, and Fleet Focus M5.
Additional Considerations
Experience developing equipment specifications and overseeing equipment rental and leasing contracts. A combination of training, experience, or education in Mechanical Engineering, Business Administration or related field desired. Experience in fleet management and equipment operations. Certified Professional Fleet Manager desired.
